A project featuring two independent drive units in one mast.
Moffett Field’s iconic Hangar One, a significant beacon of the San Francisco Bay Area’s early aviation history, is stepping into a new era. With roots dating back to 1933 and designed originally for the USS Macon dirigible airship, the hangar is currently on a journey of restoration.
The intent is not only to preserve its historical value but to reestablish it as a hub for innovation, marking a harmonious blend of past and future. SAEclimber’s customized P45 featuring two independent drive units on one mast was chosen to get the job done.
The massive restoration project spearheaded by Google and NASA includes removing and renovating parts of the steel structure and a new cladding. After the remediation, clean-up, and restoration work is complete, Hangar One – now more than 90 years old – will be closer than ever to reuse. This event has captured the interest of all national media because it is a restructuring of a structure that is the history of American aviation.
SAEclimber took on the daunting task of this massive project. After a period of rigorous study and testing, we provided a practical solution, demonstrating the adaptability, strength, and versatility of SAEclimber’s mast climbers, backed by the expertise of t our engineers.
Key considerations included a height of 65 meters and inclined facades of 25 and 30 degrees.
Special drive units with devices to ensure the working platform remained level were employed.
A crucial aspect was the anchoring forces due to the inclined facade and the metal structure’s typology, which required special attention.
Unique tie solutions were implemented, and a distinct approach for the placement of cladding was devised, all in line with SAEclimber’s commitment to authenticity and innovation.
Not to mention the possibility of using two drive units in the same mast to ensure the two sides of the mastclimber work independently.
Some P45 in triple mast configuration with independents drive units were then supplied
Some P45 in double deck configuration and in single mast configurations, were then also supplied
